About the breed (source cf. Wikipedia):

The Shetland pony is a small horse breed from the Shetland Isles (Scotland). Shetlands are very strong for their size. They from a minimum height of approximately 28 inches to an official maximum height of 42 inches (10.2 hh, 107 cm) at the withers. Shetland ponies have thick coats, short legs and are considered very intelligent. They are used for riding, driving, and pack purposes and are also especially long-lived.

According to the breed standard, Shetlands can be any colour (black, skewbald, piebald, chenstnut, bay, brown, grey, dun, roan etc.).

As far as their appearance is concerned, Shetland ponies have a small head, sometimes with a dished face, big eyes and small, alert ears. They have a short, muscular neck, compact, stocky bodies, and short, strong legs with a shorter than normal cannon bone in relation to their size. A short broad back and deep girth are universal characteristics as is a springy stride. Shetland ponies have very long thick manes and tails and a dense double winter coat to withstand harsh weather conditions.
